Chapter 10

Now that I can’t visit Zanum, I’m having a lot of trouble falling asleep. I toss and turn every night, thinking about Dhan, wanting to be with him, desperate to know if he’s okay.

Each night, I flip through my memories. Savoring them usually helps lull me to sleep. Sometimes Dhan comes to me in my dreams and I wake up not being able to tell if I’m there, or here. Then or now.

I know it’s not real when he’s the young Dhan, the nine-year-old boy I first met, but when he’s the grown-up Dhan, I can smell the hints of cinnamon on his skin and feel his sun-warmed arms…

Like the other night. I had one of those naked-limbs-entwined dreams and woke up sweating and breathing heavy. My body was alive with a chorus of crashing currents. I stayed up for a while, trying to remember when it was, the very moment, that I knew I was in love. Trying to pinpoint the exact point of transition from childhood friend to a love that invades my every thought and emotion is like trying to nail down a wisp of smoke.
